Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts the federal national census (U.S. Constitution, Article I, sec. 2). Census figures are essential in determining how much federal funding a state receives, as well as how many U.S. Representatives represent each state in Congress.

In between decennial censuses, the U.S. Census Bureau issues QuickFacts, which shows yearly statistics.

POPULATION GROWTH RATES
According to the 2020 census, Maryland's population is 6,177,224, ranked 18th in the nation. Maryland's population continues to grow by at least 7% each decade. It is the 22nd fast-growing state in the nation relative to its population.

Maryland ranked as the most diverse state on the East Coast and the third-most diverse state in the nation, according to the 2020 U.S. Census Diversity Index.

In Maryland, 15.4% of the population is foreign-born, as reported by the Migration Policy Institute in 2019.
