Digitization Capabilities & Services
The Maryland State Archives offers digitization services that comply with archival standards. Please contact Kathryn Baringer at Kathryn.Baringer@maryland.gov for assistance.These digitization services are available for a wide range of record types including, but not limited to:
Paper Scanning
- Office documents
- Letter, legal, and large format maps and drawings
- Archival manuscripts
Bound Book Scanning
- Bound and loose newspapers
- Experience with all size books and bindings
Archival Preservation Scanning
- Fragile, rare, and/or loose documents
- Experience digitizing fragile, rare, and one-of-a-kind materials including:
- Loose papers, bound books, records, and newspapers
- Oversized maps, drawings, and large-format materials
- Speciality film formats such as glass-plate negatives and sheet negatives
Microfilm Scanning
- 16mm and 35mm (REELS)
- Positive or negative
- Bi-tonal output to: TIFF (G4), PDF (all single/multi), and PDF/A
- Grayscale output to: uncompressed TIFF/JPEG (true 256 shades of gray), JPEG 2000, PDF (single/multi-page), and PDF/A
Output/Additional Services
- Output Services
- Delivery via FTP or external drives for customer post-processing
- Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for full-text searches
- Embedded metadata
- Variety of export file options based on customer needs
