INDEX TO THE LAWS.
Such license shall authorise them for one year to
pilot vessels of the draught to be therein mentioned,
and they shall thereafter be reputed lawful pilots,
Such license to be renewed, if the board think
proper, every year in April or May, and at no other
time, unless prevented by sickness, &c.
Fees to the register for renewals,
Three years employment as a pilot,
or four years
service as an apprentice, required as a qualification,
The members of the board directed
to take an oath
to act impartially, &c.
The board empowered to make a common
seal, and
to appoint a register, who shall enter their proceedings,
and countersign the warrants, which shall be under
the seal of the board,
Persons licensed not to act as pilots,
unless they keep
a boat of the dimensions and marks therein prescribed,
Penalty on their so acting,
Penalty on persons, without warrants,
piloting any
vessel in or out,
Not to prevent them from assisting vessels in distress,
if such vessel shall be delivered by them to a pilot
coming on board,
The pilot to pay such persons half the fees,
Not more than six pilots to be in
partnership under
the penalty of $200 each,
Pilots to procure a copy of the law,
and to give bond
with security for the faithful discharge of their duty,
The board may make the rules, &c.
for the government
and regulation of pilots, and may suspend or deprive
them of their licenses for acting contrary thereto,
Penalty on their acting while so suspended
or deprived,
Every master of a merchant vessel
drawing nine feet
water or upwards, coming from sea, shall be obliged
to receive the first pilot who offers below the Horse
Shoe, to conduct his vessel,
He shall continue him to his first
port of discharge,
or pay him half pilotage to the first port,
Every master of such vessel going
to sea shall be
obliged to receive a pilot, and continue him to the
Capes, or pay half pilotage thereto to the first applicant,
The master of every vessel having
no pilot, who shall
follow another vessel that has a pilot on board, shall
pay
him half pilotage,
Pilots exempted from militia duty,
Pilots standing out to sea shall offer
their services
first to the vessel nearest the land, or in most distress,
under the penalty of $50,
Pilots not hindered by sickness, &c.
refusing to go
on board any vessel when required shall forfeit $100,
In either case they may be suspended
by the board,
Pilots, on offering their services,
shall produce and
show to masters of vessels their warrant and license
under
the penalty of $10,
Pilots convicted of losing negligently
or carelessly
any vessel under their care, shall be incapable of acting
as pilots, and be liable to an action for damages,
Where they run a vessel on shore entitled to no
pilotage,
If by negligence, they shall be liable to an action
for damages,
