INDEX TO THE LAWS.
Additional allowance to pilots for
touching at Hampton
Roads, or at Annapolis, for any other cause than
distress of weather,
Pilots obliged when they receive their
pilotage to
produce a copy of this act to the master,
Penalty on refusal or neglect,
Wages, &c. to pilots, who may
be carried to sea
against their inclination,
Pilots refusing on notice to aid any
vessel in distress,
within six leagues to the southward of Cape Henry,
or to the eastward of Cape Charles, or in Chesapeake
Bay, on proof thereof before the board, shall be rendered
incapable of serving,
Further allowance to pilots detained
on board of vessels
subjected to quarantine,
For detention by masters, not being ready to proceed
according to their notice,
Every pilot shall, within three months
after obtaining
his warrant, take at least one white apprentice,
and instruct him in the art of piloting,
Such apprentice to have freedom dues, and the
usual allowance at the expiration of his time, and to
be exempt from militia duty,
Provisional regulations concerning
the piloting of
vessels bound to Virginia,
All contracts made between the master
of any vessel
in distress, and any pilot, shall be void; but the pilot
shall be entitled to a reasonable reward for his aid,
&c.
Directions for filling vacancies in
the board of examiners,
Provision that the act should commence
on the first
of February 1804, and continue in force until congress
should take congnizance of the subject,
Vessels belonging to persons not citizens
of the
United States, arriving from sea, obliged to take a pilot
if offered,
One third additional pilotage to be paid, and the
same, if the pilot is refused,
Pilots neglecting to renew their warrants
to pay
double fees, after the first of June in every year, unless
prevented by sickness or being carried out to sea,
The board of examiners empowered to
decide all
matters relative to this act, whether penalty or dispute,
within three days after application by the complainants,
The acts of 1787, ch. 26, and 1790,
ch. 27, repealed,
so far as provided for by this act,
The board of examiners directed to
grant a license
to a man of colour therein mentioned,
Exception as to pilots, in the act
to prevent the inconveniencies
arising from slaves being permitted to
act as free,
Fine on pilots charging or receiving
greater or lesser
fees than allowed by law,
The warrants or licenses of pilots
to become void on
their removal out of the state,
The evidence thereof shall be the public declaration
of the board published in two or more of the newspapers
printed in Baltimore,
No person entitled to a warrant unless
he shall satisfy
the board that he has been employed three years in
the business of piloting in the Chesapeake Bay,
Penalty on any person who shall employ
his vessel
as a pilot boat, unless he is a licensed pilot, and follows
that occupation,
