Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Julia Ann
Lednum hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law.   And whereas on the oath of James Hignutt has
been proven that Said Julia Ann Lednum was free born I do
therefore grant this Certificate.  She is now about twenty two
Years of age five feet three inches high or thereabout of a Chestnutt
Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has two
large Scars on her left Arm and one on her right Arm Caused
by a burn and a Scar on her left eye Caused by the Cut of
a knife and has no other notable mark or Scar that I have observed
(Seal)    In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
             affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
             Sixth day of September Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred
             and fifty nine

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Ellen Boston
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law;
And whereas on the oath of Zebediah Turner has been proven that said
Ellene Boulan was free born.  I do therefore grant this certificate.  She
is now about thirty three Years of age five feet One and a half inches
high or thereabout of a dark Chestnutt Complexion and was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a Scar on the left rist
Caused by the Cut of a knife and each of her little fingers are crooked
and has no other notable mark or Scar that I have observed     
            In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix
(Seal)   the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 8th day of
            September Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and fifty nine
