Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
Whereas Betsey Smith hath made application to me for a
certificate of her freedom agreeably to law:  And whereas on the
oath of William A Willims has been proven that Said
Betsey Smith is now free I do therefore grant this certificate she
is now about thirty years of age five feet and six inches high
or thereabout of a black complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County and has one Scar on the left side of her
jaw caused by the tooth acke & has no other mark Scar that
I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my
                         name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court
(seal)                 for Caroline County this fourteenth day of September
                         Anno Domini 1859

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Ruth Ann
Friend hath made application to me for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to law.   And whereas on the Oath of John
Gambrill has been proven that Said Ruth Ann Friend was
free born.   I do therefore grant this certificate She is now
about twenty five years of age five feet and two inches high
or thereabout of a Chesnutt Complexion was born & raised
in Caroline County and has no mark or scar that I have
observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
(seal)              my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit
                      Court for Caroline County this fifteenth day
                      of November Anno Domini 1859
