Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas James Gross
hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath of Sarah F
Fountain has been proven that said James Gross was free
born.   I do therefore grant this certificate he is now about
twenty four years of age five feet six and one half inches
high or thereabout of a black complexion was born and
raised in Caroline County and has no notable mark or
scar that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
    (seal)    name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
                Caroline County this sixteenth day of august
                Anno Domini 1859
                                              Robert J. Jump Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
             Whereas Eliza Clarkson hath made application to me for
a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law:  And whereas on
the oath of Thomas Willoughby has been proven that said
Eliza Clarkson was free born.  I do therefore grant this
certificate she is now about twenty nine years of age five feet
and three inches high or thereabout of a chesnutt complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has a mark
partly over the left eye & has no other notable marke or scar
that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
             name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
(Seal)    Caroline County this twenty ninth day of august
             Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and fifty nine
