Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Gustavus Green hath made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law:  and whereas on the
Oath of Edward Carty hath been proven that said Gustavus Green was free
born   I do therefore grant this Certificate.   He is now about twenty eight years
of age five feet seven inches and one half high or thereabout of black complexion &
has two scars on his left leg just below the knee caused by the cut of a Scythe
Blade & another scar on his breast Caused by a burn & has no other marks
or scars that I have observed
(Seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the seal
          of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this Fourth day of June
          Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and sixty

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas heretofore to wit:  On the first
day of February Eighteen Hundred and twenty six a certain Thomas Burchenal of
Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded
among the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain
negro child named Harriet to be free when she should arrive at the age of twenty
five years and whereas application hath been made to me by the said Harriet Ann
Lewis for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such Case made
and provided   And Whereas also upon the oath of Sarah F Fountain that said
negro woman named Harriet Ann Lewis is the same woman mentioned in said Manumission
and that she is now free.  I do therefore grant her said application.  She is
now about thirty six years of age five feet and one inch high or thereabout of a dark
Chestnutt Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County & has a large scar
on her left hand caused by a burn & has also lost the nail from the thumb of her
right hand & has no other marks or scars that I have observed.   In Testimony whereof
(seal)    I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
          this 13th day of June Anno Domini 1860
