Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Clarrissa Rich hath
made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law:  and whereas
on the oath of George Washington Vincent hath been proven that said
Clarrissa Rich was free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate.  She is now
about thirty five years of age five feet and one inch high or thereabout of a
Black Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County & has her face
marked with the small pox & has no other mark or Scar that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the
          Circuit Court for Caroline County this 22.nd day of May Anno Domini 1860

State of Maryland Caroline County.  Whereas on the Sixth day of March Anno
Domini Eighteen hundred and thirty seven a certain Peter Tokely of Caroline
County by Bill of Sale duly executed acknowledged and recorded in one of the
Land record books for Caroline County did manumit by Bill of Sale two negroes
one called Charles Emory Tokely to serve twenty three years which time expired on
the 15th day of January 1859.  And whereas application hath been made to me for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to law:  and whereas on the oath of Charles H. Todd
hath been proven that said Charles Emory Tokely is the same negro mentioned in the Bill of
Sale  I do therefore grant this certificate.  He is now about thirty one years of age
five feet three and one quarter inches high or thereabout of a Black Complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County and has a scar over his left eye caused by
the Cut of a oyster shell & has three on the black of his hand and has no other mark
or scar that I have observed.  In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribed my
(Seal)   name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
       twenty ninth day of May Anno Domini Eighteen hundred & Sixty
