Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

            In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the
(Seal)   Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 1.st day of May
           Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred and Sixty
                                                                      Robert J Jump Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas John Pembleton hath made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law:  and whereas on the oath ^affirmation^
of Samuel Dunning hath been proven that said John Pembleton was free born
I do therefore grant this certificate.  He is now about twenty Seven years of age
five feet eight and three quarter inches high or thereabout of a black Complexion
and was born and raised in Caroline County and has a Scar on the left Arm
just above the elbow and has no other mark or scar that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the seal of
        the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 5th day of May Anno Domini Eighteen
    Hundred and sixty

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Carrissa Harriss hath made
application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to law and whereas on the oath
of Abraham Y Collins hath been proven that said Carrissa Harriss was free born.  I do therefore
grant this Certificate.  She is now about 23 years of age five feet three and one half
inches high or thereabout of a Mulatto Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has marks on her face callosd by the small Pox and has a Scar on the right
arm caused by a burn & has no other notable mark or Scar that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the
       Circuit Court for Caroline County this 8th day of May Anno Domini 1860
