Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit.  Whereas Mary Ellen
Anderson hath made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law and whereas on the oath of James Melvin has been
proven that said Mary Ellen Anderson was free born and raised
in Caroline County.  She is now about thirty years of age five feet three
and one half inches high or thereabout of a Chesnut Complexion and
has a Scar on the back of her neck caused by a burn and has
a whitle on the Second finger of her right hand and has no other
notable mark or Scar that I have observed
(seal)       In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix
       the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 21.st
day of April Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred and Sixty

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas heretofore to wit:  On the
26th day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and thirty a certain John Rumbold late of Caroline County and State of Maryland
by a deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among
the Land record books of Caroline County aforesaid did manumit and set
free a certain negro woman named Mary to be free form and after the
age of twenty five years.  And Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman now present calling herself Mary Webb for a
Certificate of her freedom agreeably to law.  And Whereas on the oath of Matthew
Patton has been proven that Said Mary Webb is the same negro woman
named in the aforegoing deed of Manumission and now free.  I do therefore grant this
certificate.  She is now about thirty two years of age five feet two inches high
or thereabout of a mulatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a scar on the right side of her neck caused by a Cancer and
has no other mark or scar that I have observed
