Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County   Whereas Stephen D Russum ^negro^ hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law and
whereas on the oath of John Gambrel has been proven that said Stephen D
Russum was free born   I do therefore grant this certificate.   He is now about
22 years of age five feet eight inches high or thereabout of a chesnut complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County and is affected in his left eye caused by a
fork.   Has no mark a scar that I have observed   In Testimony whereof I
(seal)   hereunto subscribe my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
           Caroline County this 24.d day of Decr 1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Garretson Cooper negro
hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
law   And whereas on the oath of Daniel R Stewart has been proven that
said Garretson Cooper was free born   I do therefore grant this certificate.  He
is now about Twenty four years of age.   Five feet five five and an half inches
high or thereabout of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a small scar over his left eye and one on his left cheek
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the
           seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 2d day of January
           1858
