State of Maryland Caroline County Court:   Whereas Augusta
Johns hath made application to me for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to law:   and whereas on the oath of John
Price has been proven that said augusta Johns was free
born.   I do therefore grant this certificate  She is now
about twenty Seven years of age five feet and one inch
high or thereabout of a yellow Complexion was born & raised
in Caroline County and has a verry large scar on the left
arm caused by a burn & her face is marke by the small
pocks and has no other notable mark or scar that I have
observed                  In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
                                my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit
                            Court for Caroline County this twenty
(Seal)                   Eighth day of March Anno Domini 1859

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas heretofore to wit:  on the
twelfth day of March Eighteen hundred and fifty seven a certain John
Nichols formerly of Caroline County State of Maryland but at the date
aforesaid of Saint Paul Remsey County Territory of Mennisota by deed
of manumission duly executed acknowledged and enrolled among the
land records of Caroline County aforesaid did manumit and set free
sundry negroes and among said numbers one negro man called Alexander
& Son of Charlotte) then in the service of one Edgar Plummer to be free
from & after the fifteenth of January Eighteen hundred & fifty nine
And whereas application made to me by a negro now present calling
himself Alexander Ross for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law and
whereas on the oath of Edgar Plummer has been proven that said Alexander
Ross is a child of the afs.d Charlotte & now free   I do therefore grant this
