certificate he is now about thirty years of age five feet & eight inches high
or thereabout of a chesnutt complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has one scar on the right hand caused by the cut of a
knife & has no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
                   In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and
(seal)           affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
                   2nd day of April Anno Domini 1859
                                                             Robert J. Jump Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas William
Henry Gross hath made application to me for a certificate of his
freedom agreeably to law      And whereas on the oath of William
Turner has been proven that said William Henry Gross was free born
I do therefore grant this certificate  He is now about twenty one years
of age five feet and ten inches high or thereabout of a molatto
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has
no mark or scar that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(seal)              name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
                      Caroline County this thirteenth day of April Anno
                      Domini Eighteen hundred & fifty nine
