Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Matthew Cole
hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to
law and whereas on the Oath of George M Russum has been proven that
the said Matthew ^Cole^ was free born I do therefore grant this Certificate
He is now about 22 years old five feet ten inches high a Small
Scar on the upper Lip & one on the joint of the left thumb
                                     In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(Seal)                            name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court
                                     for Caroline County this 15th day of Octo 1858
                                                          Robert J. Jump Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
                Whereas John Louis Gross hath made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
and whereas on the afirmation of Samuel Dunning has been
proven that said John Louis Gross was free born   I do therefore
grant this Certificate   He is now about twenty two Years
of age five feet and four inches high or thereabout of a Black
Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and
has no scars or marks that I have Observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my
(Seal)       name and affix the Seal of the Circuit
                Court for Caroline County this 19th day of
                October A. Domini 1858
