Domini Eighteen Hundred and fifty Eight Robert J. Jump Clerk of the Circuit Court for Caroline County State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas the sixteenth day of July Anno Domini one thousand Eight hundred and twenty three a certain Ann Trott of Caroline County by deed of Manumission duly duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land record books of Caroline County did manumit and set free several negros one called Essex to serve thirty five years from the date of the aforesaid manumission which time expired on the sixteenth day of July Eighteen hundred and fifty eight (now calling himself Essex Red) and the said negro man named Essex (now calling himself Essex Red) having made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and Whereas also upon the oath of William Turner of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Essex (now calling himself Essex Red) for whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission. I do therefore grant him said application and hereby certify that he is now about forty years of age five feet nine inches high or thereabout of a dark chesnutt complexion and has a scar over the left eye & one other scar on the forhead and has no other scar that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name (seal) and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this twenty fifth day of September Anno Domini 1858 Robert J.
