Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Elojah Adams hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to Law:
And whereas on the oath of Charles Edgell has been proven that said
Elisha Adams was free born      I do therefore grant this certificate
He is now about thirty two years of age Six feet and three inches
high or thereabout of a black Complexion was born & raised in
Caroline County and has two Scars on the Thumb of the left hand
has a scar on the first finger of the left hand and has no other
notable mark or scar that I have observed
                            In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
(Seal)                   name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court
                            for Caroline County this tenth day of September
                            Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and fifty Eight

                                                       Cir Court for Caroline County


    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;   Whereas
Hester Ann Adams hath made application to me for a certificate of
her freedom agreeably to Law;      And whereas on the Oath of Charles
Edgell has been proven that Said Hester Ann Adams was free born
I do therefore grant this Certificate She is now about thirty years
of age five feet and one half inch high or thereabout of a Black
Complexion was born & raised in Caroline County and has a not
on the right side of the neck & has a scar under the left Jaw
and has lost a part of the first Joint off the fore finger of the
right hand and has no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed            In Testimony wherof I hereunto Subscribe
(Seal)         my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
                  Caroline County this tenth day of September Anno
