Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Mahala
Barwick hath made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom
agreeably to Law:  and whereas on the oath of Samuel Cooper hath
been proven that Said Mahala Barwick was free born.  I do therefore
grant this Certificate.  She is now about Sixty Years of age five
feet three and one half inches high or thereabouts of a Mulatto
Complexion ws born and raised in Caroline County and has
                                                                no other notable
marks or Scars that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe
                         my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit
    (Seal)            Court for Caroline County this 19th day
                         of February Anno Domini Eighteen
                         Hubbard and Sixty one

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Be it rememb
                                                                   Whereas Charles A. Horsey
hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
and whereas from evidence Satisfactory to me it appears that Said Charles
A Horsey is the same negro man mentioned in a Manumission from
Charles Cottingham and is now free.  He is about Twenty Four Years
of age five feet nine and one half inches high or thereabout of a black complexion
was raised in Caroline County and has no notable marks or
scars that I have observed
            In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my hand ^name^ and affix the
(Seal)   Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 20th day of March
Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and Sixty one
