Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas
George Henry Smith hath made application to me for a Certificate
of his freedom agreeably to law:  And Whereas On the Oath of
William Sorden hath been proven that Said George Henry
Smith was free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate
He is now about twenty one years of age five feet Seven inches
high or thereabouts of a dark Chesnut Complexion was born and
raised in Caroline County and has a Scar on his Chin & has
no other notable marks of scars that I have observed
            In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe name
(Seal)   and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
County this 2nd day of January 1861

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Horace
Brown hath made application to me for a Certificate of his
freedom agreeably to Law:  And whereas on the oath of Henry Blackiston
hath been proven that Said Horace Brown was free born.  I do
therefore grant this Certificate.  He is now about Twenty Two years
of age five feet eight inches high or thereabout of a black Complexion
was born in Kent County in the State aforesaid and
raised in Caroline Co afs.d & has a Scar on his forehead and
on his right hand.   In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe
(Seal)   my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for
Caroline County this 1.st day of January A. D. 1861
