State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas Joanna
Thomas hath made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably to law and whereas on the oath of John Gambrill hath been proven that said Joanna Thomas was free born. I do therefore grant this certificate. She is now about Twenty Six years of age five feet four and one half inches high or thereabouts of a Mulatto Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has no notable marks or scars that I have observed (Seal). In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 23.rd day of November 1860 Robert J Jump Clerk State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas heretofore to wit: On the 24th day of May 1859 a certain David Knotts of Caroline County & State aforesaid by a deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded in one of the Land record books of Caroline County aforesaid did manumit and set free a Certain negro woman named Rachael Hopkins to be free on and after the 24th of May 1859. And whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman Calling herself Rachael Hopkins for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to Law. And whereas on the Oath of David Knotts hath been proven that Said Rachael Hopkins is the same negro woman mentioned in the said Manumission and is now free I do therefore grant this Certificate. She is now about thirty one years of age five feet three and one half inches high or thereabouts of a light Chesnut Complexion was born |
