Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Jacob Charles
James hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law:  And whereas on the Oath of William M. A. Liden
hath been proven that said Jacob Charles James was free born
I do therefore grant this Certificate.  He is now about Twenty One
years of age five feet nine and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a black Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a mark on his left hand and has a mark on his left hand &
has no other marks or scars that I have observed:      In Testimony whereof
I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court
for Caroline County this 13th day of November Anno Domini
(seal)   Eighteen Hundred & sixty

James hath made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law:  and whereas on the Oath of William
M. A. Liden hath been proven that said Esther Emily James
was free born I do therefore grant this Certificate  She is now
nineteen Years of age five feet four inches high or thereabouts of a
dark Chesnut Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County & has a mark on her left cheek of her face & has no
other marks or Scars that I have observed.  In Testimony whereof
I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court
for Caroline County this 13th day of November Anno Domini
