Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit      Whereas Melissa Groce
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to law, and whereas on the oath of Spencer Hitch hath been proven
that said Melissa Groce was free born   I do therefore grant this certificate
She is now about eighteen years of age four feet seven
and three quarter inches high or thereabout   of a dark chesnut
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has no
notable marks or scars that I have observed
                In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
    (Seal)   and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
                this ninth day of October Anno Domini Eighteen
                hundred and sixty
                                                 Robt J Jump Clerk of the Circuit
                                                 Court for Caroline County


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Charles Cornish
hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law:  and whereas on the oath of M.rs Nancey
Williams hath been proven that said Charles Cornish was free
born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate.  He is now about
thirty five years of age five feet Six and one half inches high or
thereabouts of a black Complexion was born and raised in
Caroline County and has a scar over the left eye & has no
other marks and Scars that I have observed
             In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
             affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
[Seal]    County this 29th day October Anno Domini
             Eighteen Hundred and Sixty
