State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Mary
Jane Downes hath made application to me for a Certificate of her
freedom agreeably to law and whereas on the oath of Tilghman
Nuttle hath been proven that Said Mary Jane Downes was free
born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate.  She is now about nineteen
years of age five feet four and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a Chesnut Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has no notable marks or scars that I have observed
             In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
{Seal}   affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
             this Fifth day of October Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred
             and Sixty

                                           Circuit Court for Caroline County


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Maria Peck
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to
law, and whereas on the oath of William Connelly hath been proven that
said Maria Peck is free   I do therefore grant this certificate   She is
now about twenty nine years of age five feet five and an half inch
inches or thereabout of a mulatto complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County and has a small scar over the left eye and has no
other marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
    (Seal)         and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
                      this ninth day of October Anno Domini Eighteen hundred
                      and sixty                        Robert J Jump Clerk of the Circuit
                                                           Court for Caroline County
