State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas Martha Jane Cooper hath made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to law: and whereas on the Oath of James Swan hath been proven that said Martha Jane Cooper was free born. I do She is now about nineteen Years of age five feet high or thereabouts of a Mulatto Complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has no notable mark or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and (seal) affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this twenty fifth day of September Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Robt. J. Jump Clerk of the Circuit Court for Caroline Co. State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas heretofore to wit: On the 28th day of May 1828 a certain Joseph Talbot of Caroline County and State of Maryland by a deed of Manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the Land record books for Caroline County aforesaid did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Henrietta Mackey to be free from and after the first day of January Eighteen Hundred and forty two And whereas application hath been made to me by a negro woman now present Calling herself Henrietta Shepard for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably to law and whereas on the oath of James Swan hath been proven that said Henrietta Shepard is the same negro woman named in the aforegoing deed of Manumission and is now free I do therefore grant this Certificate She is now about |
