Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;
                      Whereas Harrison Davis negro hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to law.  And whereas on the oath of William G. Nicholson
has been proven that said Harrison Davis was free
born.  I do therefore grant this certificate.  He is now
about twenty two years of age five feet and four
inches high or thereabot of a black complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has
'no notable mark or scar that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(seal)     my name and affix the seal of the
             Circuit Court for Caroline County this eighth
             day of September Anno Domini Eighteen
             hundred and sixty
                                  Robert J. Jump Clk


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Sarah
Elizabeth Red hath made application to me for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to Law:  And Whereas on the Oath of D.r P. O.
Cherbonnier hath been proven that said Sarah Elizabeth Red
was free born I do therefore grant this Certificate She is now about
Sixteen Years of age five feet one inch high or thereabout of dark
Chesnut Complexion & has a scar over the left eye & has a scar on
the inside of her left hand & has no other mark or scars that I
have observed.   She was born & raised in Caroline County
(Seal)   In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and affix
the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 14th day of
September Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred and Sixty      Robert J Jump clk
