Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Anna Cooper
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to Law.  And whereas on the oath of Spencer Hutch has
been proven that the said Anna Cooper was free born I do
therefore grant this certificate.  She is now about thirty years
of age five feet high or thereabout of a chesnutt complexion
and was born and raised in Caroline County & has a scar
on the right rist caused by a burn & has no other mark or
scar that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
(seal)     and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
County this fifteenth day of august Anno Domini eighteen
hundred and sixty

                                           Circuit Ct. for Caroline County


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas William Henry Wilkinson
hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
And whereas on the Oath of Philip W. Downes hath been proven that
said William Henry Wilkinson was free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate
He is now about Seventy eight years of age five feet ten inches high
or thereabout of a Chesnut Complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a Scar on  his ^left leg^ throat caused by the Cut of an axe
& has another scar under his throat Caused by a Kings Evil & has
no other marks or scars that I have observed.  In Testimony
(seal)   Whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit
Court for Caroline County this 29.th day of August Anno Domini Eighteen
