Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas James Mote hath
made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to law
and whereas on the oath of Richard O Hicks hath been proven that
said James Mote was free born.  I do therefore grant this Certificate
He is now about Twenty one years of age five feet ten and three
Quarter inches high or thereabouts of a Black Complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a large scar on his
Belly Caused by a burn & has no other marks or scars that
I have observed            In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
(Seal)   my name and affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
County this Twenty Eighth Day of July Anno Domini 1860

                                                    of the Cir Ct for Caro. Co


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas Harriet
Dickerson hath made application to me for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to law   And whereas on the oath of John Collins
hath been proven that said Harriet Dickerson was free
born        I do therefore grant this certificate:  she is now about
twenty one years of age four feet nine & one half inches high
of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a scar on her right wrist caused by a burn
& has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
(Seal)    & affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
             County this tenth day of August A. D. 1860

                                                 Circuit Court for Caroline Co.
