aforesaid, at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents,
the receipt whereof I, the said Edward J. Chairs do hereby acknowledge
have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents
do grant, bargain and sell unto the said Rhoda Chairs,
her executors, administrators and assigns, one negro man
named Charles, aged about thirty nine years, a slave for
life (said negro man Charles was allotted to me in the
distribution among the heirs of my Father William B.
Chairs's personal estate)  To have and to hold the said negro
man Charles, above bargained and sold, or mentioned and
intended so to be to the said Rhoda Chairs, her executors, administrators
and assigns forever.  And I the said Edward
J. Chairs for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators
the said negro man Charles, a slave for life, unto
the said Rhoda Chairs, her executors, administrators, and
assigns, against me the said Edward J. Chairs, my executors,
administrators and assigns and against and
every other person or persons whatsoever, shall and will
warrant, and forever defend by these presents.  In witness
whereof, I the said Edward J. Chairs have hereunto
set my hand and seal this twelvth day of April 1851

State of Maryland, Anne Arundel County Sct:   Be it remembered,
and it is hereby certified that on this twelvth
day of April 1851, before the subscriber, one of the Justices of the
Peace of the State of Maryland, in and for the said county,
personally appeared Edward J. Chairs, he being known to me
to be the person who is named and described as, and professing
to be the party grantor to the foregoing bill of sale or instrument
of writing, and doth acknowledge the same to be his act and deed.

And at the same time and place also appeared before
me Rhoda Chairs (mother of the said Edward J Chairs) grantee
in the aforesaid bill of sale named, and made oath that
the consideration set forth in said bill of sale is true
and bona fide as therein set forth.

Anne Arundel County, to wit:  I certify that the grantee
this day paid one dollar, being the duty chargeable by
law in this Instrument of Writing, the receipt whereof
