628 LAWS OF MARYLAND Ch. 14
that definition is applicable to the Maryland
Vehicle Law and, therefore, only requires
expansion to include a province of Canada, as.
provided in present Art. 66 1/2, §1-190 and
this new section.
11-162. STOP.
"STOP" MEANS:
(1) WHERE USED IN A MANDATORY SENSE, THE COMPLETE
CESSATION FROM MOVEMENT; AND
(2) WHERE USED IN A PROHIBITORY SENSE, TO HALT EVEN
MOMENTARILY A VEHICLE, WHETHER OR NOT IT IS OCCUPIED,
EXCEPT WHEN NECESSARY TO AVOID CONFLICT WITH OTHER
TRAFFIC OR IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE DIRECTIONS OF A POLICE
OFFICER OR A TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE.
REVISOR'S NOTE: This section is new language that
combines without substantive change Art. 66
1/2, §§ 1-191 and 1-192.
In item (2) of this section, the term
"stopping", which is defined in present Art.
66 1/2, §1—192 as synonymous with "stop", is
deleted as unnecessary. The meaning of
"stopping" and other verbal variations used in
the Maryland Vehicle Law would necessarily
derive from the definition of the verb "stop".
11-163. STREET.
"STREET" MEANS A HIGHWAY, AS DEFINED IN THIS
SUBTITLE.
REVISOR'S NOTE: This section is new language
substituted without substantive change for
Art. 66 1/2, §1-193.
As presently defined, "highway" and "street"
are synonymous and, therefore, interchangeable
terms. The substitution here of a simple
cross-reference makes that construction more
apparent and assures continuation of this
identity of meaning, even if the definition of
"highway" later is amended.
11-164. SUSPEND (LICENSE TO DRIVE).
"SUSPEND", AS USED IN REFERENCE TO ANY LICENSE TO
DRIVE A VEHICLE, MEANS TO WITHDRAW TEMPORARILY, BY FORMAL
ACTION OF THE ADMINISTRATION, AN INDIVIDUAL'S LICENSE TO
DRIVE A MOTOR VEHICLE ON HIGHWAYS IN THIS STATE, BUT
ONLY FOR A PERIOD SPECIFICALLY DESIGNATED BY THE
ADMINISTRATION.
