troduce an act to make valid and effectual the devise and pro-
visions contained in the last will and testament of Thomas
Shields, deceased, for the benefit of the First Baptist church,
of Philadelphia.

On motion of Mr. Kilgour,

Leave was granted to the Allegany county delegation, to
bring in a bill entitled, an act to indemnify Joseph Sprigg,
of Allegany county, for the loss of his negro man George,
who was murdered by a mob at Williamsport on the twenty-
third day of June, eighteen hundred and fifty-three, through
default of the civil authorities to preserve the peace.

On motion of Mr. McPherson,

Leave was granted to the committee on Judiciary, to in-
troduce an act for the restraint of Drunkenness.

On motion of Mr. Hobbs,

Leave was granted to the committee on Corporations, to
introduce a bill entitled, a further supplement to an act enti-
an act entitled, an act to incorporate the Frederick town Sa-
ving's Institution, passed December session, 1826, March 9,
1827, chapter 189, and the several supplements thereto.

On motion of Mr. Ford, of Baltimore county,
Leave was granted to the Baltimore county delegation, to
bring in a bill for the relief of John L. Stansbury, late re-
ceiver of the State tax in Baltimore county, for the year 1848.
On motion of Mr. Landing,

Leave was granted to the committee on Claims, to bring
in a bill to refund a certain sum of money to Littleton P.
Dennis, formerly of Worcester county, erroneously paid into
the Treasury.

The hour of 12 o'clock having arrived,

The House resumed the consideration of the order of the
day, being

The bill entitled, a supplement to an act passed January
session 1853, entitled, an act to regulate pilotage.

Mr. McPherson proposed the following amendment:
"In section 1, line 5, strike out the word "south," and in-
sert the words "west and Cape Charles bears north ;"

Mr. Contee proposed the following as a substitute for said
amendment;

"In section 1 line 5, strike out "south," and insert "south
south-west ;'

Which was assented to.

Mr. Grieves proposed the following amendment:
At the end of the 1st section, add, "all vessels exclusively
