Preamble.

Preamble and Resolution in favor of Commander Wil-
liam J. Belt, U. S. N.
WHEREAS, The Legislature of Maryland, by resolu-
tions passed at December session, eighteen hundred and
forty-three, and at December session, eighteen hundred
and forty-four, expressed the anxious desire that Com-
mander Wm. J. Belt should be reinstated in Naval ser-
vice of the United States, from which he had been dis-
missed by a Court Martial in eighteen hundred and forty-
two, and whereas it is represented to this General As-
sembly that his Excellency, the present President of the
United States, is willing to reinstate the said Comman-
der Belt, if upon an investigation of the said sentence of
the court martial by the Senate of the United State, that
body should be of opinion that he could be reinstated
without injury to the service; therefore,
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the Governor of this State be requested to trans-
mit copies of the said resolution passed in eighteen hun-
dred and forty-three and eighteen hundred and forty-four,
to the Senators of this State in the Congress of the Unit-
ed States, with the request that they will bring the sub-
ject before the Senate, and that they will endeavour to
gratify the wishes of this legislature by having the said
Commander Belt reinstated in the United States Navy.

Resolution appointing a Director in the Mechanics' Bank
of Baltimore.
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
Thomas J. Hall be, and he is hereby appointed on the
part of this State, a director in the Mechanics' Bank of
Baltimore.
