CHAPTER 647

(House Bill 536)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
30 (a) of Article 39 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1947 Supplement), title "Fish and Fisheries", sub-title
"Tidal Waters", sub-heading "Nets and Seines", and to add
four new sub-sections, to be known as Sub-sections (e), (f),
(g) and (h) and to follow immediately after Sub-section (d)
of said section, as enacted by Chapters 543 and 557 of the
Acts of 1949, relating to the size and use of haul seines.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land,
That Section (30 (a) of Article 39 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Fish and Fisheries",
sub-title "Tidal Waters", sub-heading "Nets and Seines", be
and it is hereby repealed and reenacted, with amendments,
and that four new sub-sections be and they are hereby added to
said section, said new sub-sections to be known as Sub-sections
(e), (f), (g) and (h), to follow immediately after Sub-section
(d) of said section, as enacted by Chapters 543 and 557 of the
Acts of 1949, and all to read as follows:

30.

(a) It shall be unlawful to [drag any seine by the use of a
vessel or boat, or to] use any haul seine more than 600 yards
in length except that if the State of Virginia should take
action making it unlawful to use haul seines more than 500
yards in length or should take such action contingent upon
similar action by the State of Maryland, then it shall be unlaw-
ful to use any haul seine more than 500 yards in length. Noth-
ing in this section shall be construed to prevent the setting
of a seine [from a vessel or boat] in the customary manner.
"Customary manner" shall be defined as follows: starting from
the inshore braille, play net out in a straight line until the
center of the bunt or back is in the water; then turn 90 degrees
and parallel the shore until the outshore braille is
overgoard;

OVERBOARD; then turn 90 degrees and head directly for
shore. One power boat may be used.

(e) Haul seines shall be limited to a depth or width of fifteen
(15) feet graduating to a width of twenty-two (22) feet at the
