SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.

CHAPTER 533
(House Bill 256)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section
55B of Article 1A of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland (1930 Edition), title 'City of Cumberland", sub-
title "Taxes", as amended by Chapter 42 of the Acts of
1933, raising permissible taxes.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 55B of Article 1A of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "City of Cum-
berland", sub-title "Taxes", as amended by Chapter 42 of the
Acts of 1933, be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

55B. Said Mayor and City Council of Cumberland shall
have power to levy and collect a tax on the assessable property
of said city for the general purposes of said corporation,
not exceeding in any one year ninety cents on each one
hundred dollars worth of said assessable property; and in
addition, to levy and collect such a tax on the assessable
property of said city as may be necessary to pay the interest
on all the outstanding city bonds, and to provide a fund for
the redemption and payment thereof at maturity, provided,
however, that the total bonded or floating indebtedness of said
city (exclusive of the indebtedness of the Water Department)
shall not exceed at any one time ten per cent, of the assessed
valuation of the property in said city.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall be
inoperative if House Bill No. 108, revising the Charter of the
City of Cumberland, is enacted into law at this legislative
session.

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.
