to Article 89B of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939
Edition), title "State Roads", said new section to be known
as Section 2A, to follow immediately after Section 2 of
said Article, and to read as follows:

2A. (a) On or after June 1, 1943, in any County of
the State where the State Roads Commission has juris-
diction over the maintenance of both the State and County
roads, it shall be the duty of the State Roads Commission
to confer the title of "Resident Maintenance Engineer"
upon that person who, on June 1, 1943, already has charge
of the maintenance of both the State and County roads for
the State Roads Commission in that County and after the
title of "Resident Maintenance Engineer" is conferred
upon that person, it shall be the duty of the State Roads
Commission to certify his name to the State Employment
Commissioner, with the salary, not to exceed Three Thou-
sand Dollars ($3, 000, 00) per year, to be paid, and the
State Employment Commissioner is hereby ordered and
directed to classify the said employee as "Resident Main-
tenance Engineer" for that particular County, without any
further examination or restriction, except that in case of
vacancies which may occur from time to time on account
of death, or removal for inefficiency or neglect of duty,
in accordance with the provisions of Article 64A of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1939 Edition), such position
shall be filled in accordance with the provisions of said
Article 64A.

(b) The State Roads Commission is also authorized to
confer the title of "Resident Maintenance Engineer" upon
any person in any other County where that person has
similar duties and where the State Roads Commission has
jurisdiction only over the State Roads in such County,
and the State Employment Commissioner shall so reclassify
that person without any further examination.

(e) In those Counties of the State where the "Resident
Maintenance Engineer" has supervision over the mainte-
nance of both State and County roads, his salary shall be
paid as follows:

One-half from the Lateral Road Gasoline Tax Fund al-
lotted for the maintenance of County roads;

One-half from the Gasoline Tax Fund allotted for the
maintenance and reconstruction of the State Roads.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1943.
