bridge who may demand an inspection of the same, for at least
one year. The said board shall examine the papers submit-
ted by each applicant and grade them, taking into account in
such grading the mental and physical qualifications of each ap-
plicant, and also his fitness for a police officer. Any appli-
cant who has obtained an average of sixty per cent in the pre-
liminary examination aforesaid and has passed a satisfactory
physical examination may be appointed as a probationary
officer for the City of Cambridge, with all the powers and
duties of a regular police officer, for a period of six (6) months,
unless said Board of Police Commissioners, in its discretion^
shall dismiss such probationary officer during said period be-
cause of his lack of the necessary requirements and qualifi-
cations for a probationary officer, or until he shall be given
a final mental examination by the said Board of Police Com-
missioners, and upon passing said mental examination, with
an average of sixty per cent, and also passing a satisfac-
tory physical examination, said probationary officer may be
appointed a regular police officer of the City of Cambridge to
serve as may be now provided by law. If any person feels
himself aggrieved at the average given to him by the said
board, he may, within three days after the report of said board,
on said final examination, file with the secretary of said board
an appeal to the Commissioners of Cambridge, which appeal
shall be heard by the Commissioners of Cambridge at their
next regular meeting, and the average fixed by the said Com-
missioners of Cambridge shall be final and substituted for the
average given to said applicant by said Board of Police Com-
missioners.

71. The said Board of Police Commissioners are author-
ized and required, within ten days after the preliminary ex-
amination hereinbefore provided for, to appoint, enroll and
employ a permanent police force for the City of Cambridge, the
term of service of any member of said police force so appointed
shall begin on the day of his appointment and shall continue
during good behavior until said members shall have reached
the age of sixty-five years unless removed sooner for cause by
the Board of Police Commissioners, and provided further
that they have passed the mental and physical examinations
as hereinbefore required by law; but said Board of Police
Commissioners, in its discretion, after a member of said po-
lice force has reached the age of sixty-five, shall have the pow-
er to continue any such member of said police force in service
for a longer period of time. The Police Commissioners shall
arm and equip such police force as they may judge necessary,
under such rules and regulations as they may from time to
time prescribe; and the said board shall have power to remove
