the chief of police or any police officer or probationary officer
for the violation of any rule and regulation which they may
make and promulgate to said police force, said police force to
consist of one chief of police, and not more than one policeman,
regular policeman or probationary officer, for each one thou-
sand inhabitants of the said City of Cambridge; the pay of
the chief of police, regular policemen, and probationary offi-
cers, shall be designated by the Commissioners of Cambridge,
and shall be payable twice monthly, on the 15th day and the
last day of each month, by the town treasurer from the gen-
eral levy made for the purpose of maintaining a police de-
partment. The said police board may appoint any person
as a policeman, with all the powers of a regular policeman, to
act as watchman and preserve the peace at any church, place
of amusement, railroad or steamboat station, or at any pri-
vate business place, provided the person or persons asking for
such appointments shall pay the whole of the salary or wages
of such policeman, and may also appoint such special police-
men to serve not more than 48 hours upon any one employ-
ment, as they may from time to time deem necessary or ex-
pedient to preserve the peace and order of the town or any
portion thereof.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby
declared to be an emergency law necessary for the immediate
preservation of the public safety and health, and being passed
upon a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of all the
members elected to each of the two Houses of the General As-
sembly, the same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 603.

(House Bill 775)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections
80, 82, 83 and 84 of Article 8, of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "Cecil County", sub-
title "Charlestown", and to add thirteen additional Sec-
tions to said Article under said title and sub-title to follow
Section 84 as re-enacted and to be designated as Sections
84A, 84B, 84C, 84D, 84E, 84F, 84G, 84H, 84-I, 84J, 84K
84L, and 84M relating to the government of the Town of
Charlestown and to the enlargement and the administration
of its corporate powers and subject to the ratification of the
qualified voters of said Town.
