vices which he shall render as aforesaid he shall receive a sum
not moie than twenty-five dollars annually, who shall have
charge of the seal of said town and shall enter all the ordi-
nances and proceedings of said board in a book kept by him for
that purpose.

SEC. 93. They shall have the power to levy and collect taxes
in the town, not less than forty cents and not more than fifty
cents on the one hundred dollars on the assessed property of
said town in any one year. They shall once in every five years
or oftener, if they think proper, appoint an assessor who shall
under oath value and assess the property in said town in the
same manner and with like authority as county assessors pro-
ceed to assess in the county; provided, that in assessing any of
the lands within the limits of the town which may be occupied
and used as farms, or may be a part or parts of farms, such
lands shall be valued and assessed as lots of five acres of ground
with the buildings and improvements thereon, and shall not be
valued and assessed by the number of acres therein. If any
owner of property assessed in the town shall feel aggrieved by
the assessment made by the said assessor, he may apply to the
said president and commissioners who may make such deduc-
tion thereof as to them may seem just and reasonable.

SEC. 94. The president and commissioners may from time to
time under such circumstances and conditions as they may by
their ordinances direct, appoint such officers as they may deem
necessary to carry into effect their ordinances, and as soon as
practicable after their election and qualification shall annually
appoint a town bailiff, who shall continue in office until his suc-
cessor has been appointed and has qualified, but shall be sub-
ject to removal by said board for neglect of duty, disobedience
of its orders or malfeasance in office, and shall have within said
town all the authority of a constable in making arrests and
serving warrants, who shall preserve order in said town, super-
intend all work being done for or by said town corporation
within its limits, obey and perform all orders and ordinances
of said board, have charge of and care for the fire engine ap-
paratus and other town property, light and care for and take
charge of the street lamps of said town, and perform such other
duties as said board may prescribe, and as the entire compen-
sation for all the services which he shall render under this Act
and sub-title and the ordinances and orders of said board he
shall receive annually a sum not exceeding five hundred dollars
per annum; provided, that no person holding the office of bailiff
as aforesaid shall directly or indirectly furnish teams, carts or
wagons for the use of said corporation during the term for
which he may be appointed.
