I regret that I cannot be so optimistic about our binding program. Each
year since it began I have called your attention to the fact that 1 was not
satisfied with it because we were not even approaching the commercial rate
for comparable work. It is my feeling at this writing that we cannot justify
continuing this program longer under present conditions. We have had ade-
quate time to learn techniques and assemble equipment but we have not been
able to increase production.

PHOTOCOPYING

Receipts for photocopying for this fiscal year exceeded those for the
previous year by some two hundred dollars. There was a slight decrease in
photostating, the traditional form of archival copymaking, but a large
increase in microfilming. It is our feeling that microfilm because of its cheap-
ness and lack of bulk will continue to gain in popularity as more and more
institutions and individuals provide themselves with microfilm readers. For
the individual searcher not affiliated with an institution photostat is still the
only convenient photocopy.

The microfilm projects listed below for which no payment was received
include the daily filming of Legislative proceedings for the short session of
1958, the preparation of film copies of land records of Dorchester County for
use at Cambridge, a large collection of Protestant Episcopal records of the
Diocese of Easton (some of the film for use here and some for the parishes in
those cases where the originals were left with us) and nearly 200,000 pages of
Anne Arundel County Land Records, which completed our insurance copies
of that record from the beginning of the county to 1949 when the film of the
Land Office begins.
