16 TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL REPORT

lived only long enough to see this volume off the press. His was a major share
in its production.

IN PREPARATION
Maryland Guide.

Elsewhere in this Report I have explained the legal difficulties which
have beset our efforts to issue a revised edition of this WPA production of
1940. Since it may be several years before we can publish, we have not thought
it wise to give this manuscript the highest priority. However, we have con-
tinued our field work on the Eastern Shore and in Southern Maryland.

The Coun ty Courthouses and Records of Maryland: Publication No. 12 of
the Hall of Records Commission.

The volume which has been in preparation for some years is now nearing
completion. It has been especially time consuming because so much of the
field work has depended on the cooperation and knowledge of officials and
private citizens of the counties. Nothing of this kind has ever been attempted
for the Maryland Counties and we feel, therefore, that it is a necessary task
and one which deserves our best efforts.

REPAIR AND BINDING

I have not for some years included in my annual reports comparative
figures for the repair room. The lamination of records has, of course, continued
to be our chief preoccupation. Records are prepared for lamination by one
full-time worker and one volunteer—the bulk of it, of course, is the work of
our full-time employee who also operates the laminator for her helper as well
as for herself. The steady increase in the number of pages treated may be
attributed to two causes. First, our operator over the years has improved her
technique, and second, the greater part of the most difficult work in our
collection has already been done. Much of the current and future work will
be with records which may be laminated without too much attention to re-
placing loose pieces or other special handling. We are satisfied that we can
keep abreast of our needs with the single worker now engaged in this work.
