CHAPTER 216.


AN ACT to pay Henry Aisquith for legal services rendered, from


which the State has received great benefit.


WHEREAS, the Annapolis and Elkridge railroad company which


was always supposed to be exempt under its charter, from State


and county taxation, appealed from the assessment made by Anne

Preamble.

Arundel county, and Henry Aisquith, while State's attorney for


said county, was directed by the assessment act of eighteen hun-


dred and seventy-six to appear in all such cases in behalf of the


county and State, argued said case in the circuit court of said


county, the court of appeals and the supreme court of the United


States; and


WHEREAS, as the result of the labor of the said Henry Aisquith

there has already been paid to the State in taxes from said road,


the sum of four thousand dollars; and there will accrue to the


State annually hereafter from the same source a considerable sum;


SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,

That the comptroller be and he is hereby directed to draw his


warrant upon the treasurer of the State in favor of Henry Aisquith


for the sum of three hundred dollars, which sum is hereby appro-


priated for that purpose.


SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect from

CHAPTER 217.


AN ACT to amend the charter of the North avenue railway com-


pany of Baltimore city, by authorizing it to lease, purchase or


aid other railroads or to consolidate with the same.


SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,


That the charter of the North avenue railway company be and


the same is hereby amended so that hereafter said company shall

' be authorized and empowered to consolidate with such other roads


as it may cross or connect with, and to aid such roads in the con-


struction and extension of their roads by means of subscription


to their capital stock or otherwise, and to lease or purchase such


road or roads.


SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this act shall take effect
