722 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [Ch. 514]

15th day of July for the fiscal year ending on the 30th day of
the preceding June. Said County Road Engineer shall not be
interested in any firm or corporation from which anything shall
be purchased for the use of said roads and bridges or receive
any commission on said purchase.

SEC. 272. The County Commissioners shall subject to the
approval of the County Road Engineer, appoint one assistant
to the said engineer in each of the election districts of said
county. Under the control and direction of the County Road
Engineer, the assistant shall supervise the road and bridge and
bridge work in their respective districts and perform such other
duties as the County Road Engineer may prescribe. The
assistant shall keep the time of all employees in their respec-
tive districts, and a correct record of all materials used, and
make daily report thereof, and certify bills therefor to the
County Road Engineer, to be by him approved before being
presented to the County Commissioners for payment. For
incompetency or wilful neglect of any duty imposed upon them
by this act, or by rules and regulations duly made by the County
Road Engineer, and of which they shall be given due notice,
any assistant may be suspended from service at any time by the
County Road Engineer, who shall, thereupon, state in writing
to the County Commissioners the reason for such suspension,
and if the action of the County Road Engineer shall be sus-
tained by a majority vote of the County Commissioners, the
suspended assistant shall be summarily removed from office, and
his successor appointed in the manner hereinbefore provided-
Each assistant shall receive a salary, to be fixed by the County
Commissioners, not to exceed two dollars per day for each and'
every day they shall work, and they shall devote their entire
time to their duties during such days as the County Road Engi-
neer may determine.

SEC. 273. The County Commissioners of Dorchester
County shall have authority and are hereby empowered to com-
pel any trolley or railway company having or laying tracks
on the public highways, roads, avenues or streets of Dorchester
county to change the rails and location of said tracks so as to
make said highways, roads, avenues or streets safer or better
for travel, and to compel the said company or companies to
pave and keep in repair the highways, roads, avenues or streets
covered by said tracks and extending two feet on the outer-
limits of either side of said tracks with the same kind of
paving material with which the remaining portion of said high-
way, road, avenue or street may be paved or improved. The
failure of any trolley or railway company to comply with the
