316 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [Ch. 160]

ordinance; but any individual desiring to use a plate of differ-
ent design or pattern from that prescribed by said ordinance
may do so, provided that said designs are approved by the
Mayor and Council; but the expense for any special design
shall be borne by the property owner and not by the Mayor and
Council.

SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That after the regular pas-
sage and approval of an ordinance, as provided by this act, it
shall be unlawful for any person or property owner to place
any number on any house in Hagerstown until after said num-
bers shall have been first approved by the Mayor and Council of
Hagerstown in manner and form as by said ordinance provided;
it shall be unlawful for any person or property owner to main-
tain any number on any house in Hagerstown which shall not
correspond with the correct number of said house, as determined
by the Mayor and Council in manner and form as by said
ordinance provided; it shall be unlawful for any person or
property owner to change any number on any house after said
house has been correctly numbered by the Mayor and Council
of Hagerstown. Any person or property owner who may inter-
fere with the officer or employee of the Mayor and Council of
Hagerstown in the discharge of his duties under said ordinances
shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and be amenable to
the penalties provided by said ordinance for said offense.

SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That said ordinance shall
provide as penalties for a violation of its provisions, after
conviction before one of the police justices of Hagerstown, a
fine not to exceed twenty-five dollars and costs, or imprisonment
in the county jail for a period not to exceed twenty days, or
until said fine and costs are paid.

SEC. 4. Be it further enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 160.

AN ACT to give to The Cumberland Valley Railroad Company,
formerly called The Franklin Railroad Company, the right
to revise, relocate and extend its lines of railroad and to cross
the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and
to connect with the said canal at any point between Hancock
In Washington county and Knoxville in Frederick county,
