PLEAS AND PLEADINGS

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    Of Prince-George's County, incorporated, &c.

    The weight of the plate to be expressed in the certificate
of the assessors,
    Plate to be valued at one dollar per ounce,
    The weight to be expressed in the summary account
by the clerk to the commissioners of the tax,
    Silversmiths, or others,  not to sell or exchange, or
offer to sell, &c. in Baltimore, any silver vessel, plate,
&c. (of the weight and quality therein mentioned,) till
it is stamped or marked by the assay officer,
—Penalty on offenders,
    Silversmiths, &c. to send written notes to the assayer
with their plate, containing the name, weight, &c. to
be entered by him,
—Penalty on smiths, &c. and the assayer, on default,
    Assayer to be appointed by the mayor and city council,
    Oath to be taken by him,
    The stamp to be approved by the mayor, &c. and
notice to be given of the appointment and stamp,
    The assayer to produce the stamp when required by
the mayor, &c. under the penalty therein mentioned,
    Fine and punishment for forging or counterfeiting
the stamp, or procuring the same to be done,

    Sum to be paid to the assayer for stamping, &c.

    If not paid, or the plate not stamped with the initials
of the name of the maker, the officer may refuse to
assay the plate,
    Duty of the assayer to deface plate of coarser alloy
than the standard,
    In suits under this act the general issue may be pleaded,
and the act and the special matter given in evidence,
and treble costs awarded,
    Nothing herein to affect sales of plate of the estates
of deceased persons before used by them,
    Manner of recovering fines under this act,
    Directions to the assayer to mark and stamp plate,
    The stamp to correspond with the  number of ounces,
—Plate so assayed, &c. may be sold in Baltimore,
    Nothing herein to affect sales of plate on execution,
or belonging to insolvent debtors,
    The assayer not to be concerned in the manufacture
of plate in Baltimore,
—This act to extend to the precincts,

    Under the supplement to the act to establish and regulate
a market in Charles town, in Charles county, the
general issue may be pleaded, and the act, &c. given in
evidence,
    A similar provision in the act to regulate the inspection
of tobacco,
    The insufficiency of assets to be pleaded by executors
or administrators,
—Time to be allowed for pleading,
    The party prosecuted for a libel may give the truth
of the matter charged in the indictment, &c. in evidence
under the general issue, by way of justification,
    Under the act respecting seines across the Transquakin,
&c. in Dorchester county, the general issue
may be pleaded, and the act, &c. given in evidence,
    A similar provision in the act relative to sheriffs and
constables,
    The supplement to an act to prevent any obstruction
in the navigation of the Potomac, to be deemed
