MILITIA

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    The governor and council authorised and directed,
in case of a call by the general government, to appoint
such general officers as the number of troops so called
may entitle them to,
    The field officers and captains directed to meet, and
empowered to agree on a system of cavalry tactics,
trumpet soundings, and an uniform dress, for the cavalry
field officers,
—The result to be transmitted to the governor, and
made public by him by proclamation,
—The determination so published to be binding on
the field officers, &c. under the penalties for disobedience
of orders,
    Directions for calling together the officers and non-commissioned
officers for drill exercise, and for meetings
of the regiments, squadrons and troops,
—The brigadiers of infantry may call out that portion
of cavalry within their districts, to attend the brigade
or regimental meetings,
—But not to be taken out of the county without the
consent thereof, and to be considered part of the
troop meetings prescribed,
    The horse, with the arms, &c. of an officer, noncommissioned
officer or private, exempt from taxation or
execution,
    Each person in the cavalry authorised to require the
loan of a sword and pistol, which the governor and
council are authorised to make, on bond, &c.
    Fines on cavalry officers for non attendance, &c. to
be the same as those for the infantry,
—Limitation of the fines on privates, &c.
    Commissions of the cavalry officers revoked, and
new ones directed to be issued, attaching each officer
to his regiment, &c.
—The new commissions to bear the same seniority
by date, &c. as the old ones,
    Penalties on officers, noncommissioned officers and
privates, quitting the troop, &c. unless by consent of
two thirds, or on being discharged by decision of a
court martial, or on removal,
—Fines, &c. to be collected as by the original act,
ch. 182,
    Courts martial for the trial of field officers, to be
composed of three commissioned officers ordered by the
brigadier general of infantry; regimental courts and
extra squadron courts, of three commissioned officers,
    The governor authorised at his discretion to arm
such portions of the militia as from their particular
situation may be most exposed to invasion or insurrection,
    Each commanding officer of a company to make out
and return a correct enrolment to the commanding officer
of the regiment or battalion, when required,
—Penalty on refusal or neglect,
    To each regiment of cavalry there shall be a staff, to
consist of one adjutant, one quarter master, one paymaster,
one surgeon, one surgeon's mate, and one veterinary
surgeon,
—To be appointed by the governor and council, on
the commanding officers of the regiments (with the
consent of the majority of the officers,) making application
in writing,
    Persons joining any troop, or forming a new troop,
one month before a draught under this act, (provided
the officers thereof shall have obtained commissions,)
discharged from any infantry, artillery, or rifle company,
in which they may have been enrolled,
    The governor and council directed, on the requisition
of the commanding officer of each troop, &c. to loan
