MILITIA

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

themselves, the commanding officers of companies are
authorised to cause such persons to be drilled separate,
but on the same days, and at the same place and time
of meeting with the companies,
    Out of the militia enrolled there shall be formed for
each battalion, at least one company of grenadiers, riflemen,
or light infantry; to each brigade there shall
be at least one company of artillery; to each brigade at
least four troops of horse,
—The noncommissioned officers, officers and matrosses,
in the artillery, to provide themselves with
swords,
—Penalty for neglect,
—The dragoons to arm and equip themselves as prescribed
by the act of congress,
—Penalty for neglect,
—The arms, ammunition, &c. to be held exempt
from all suits, executions, &c. or taxes,
    The governor and council authorised, when necessary,
to organize battalions and regiments of riflemen and
artillery, and companies, or horse or flying artillery,
and appoint the requisite officers,
—When said corps or companies shall have uniformed
themselves, the governor and council are authorised
to loan them the necessary arms and field
pieces,
    Uniform prescribed—for general officers, their aids
and inspectors; for field, company, and staff officers;
for noncommissioned officers and privates; for riflemen;
for cavalry; for artillery;
    All companies hereafter to be raised, who shall uniform
themselves, shall conform to the uniform of the
state,
—Those having then a different uniform, to adopt
that of the state, within three years,
    The act of 1807, and its supplements, repealed, but
all commissions under the same declared to be one of the
same force as if they were not repealed,
    Allowance to the clerk of the council for issuing
commissions,
    The state divided into eleven regimental (cavalry)
districts, and one extra squadron, to wit:  Washington
and Frederick counties the 1st.  Montgomery and
Prince-George's counties the 2d.  Calvert and Anne-Arundel
counties the 3d.  Charles and Saint Mary's
counties the 4th.  Baltimore city the 5th.  Baltimore
county the 6th.  Harford county, with Howard's troop
from Baltimore county, the 7th.  Cæcil and Kent
counties the 8th.  Queen-Anne's and Talbot counties
the 9th.  Caroline and Dorchester counties the 10th.
Somerset and Worcester counties the 11th.  And Allegany
to form an extra squadron, for the time being, or
until a regiment can be formed in said county, to be
attached to the first regimental district,
—Each regiment to be composed of two squadrons
of two troops each, commanded by a lieutenant colonel,
—Each squadron, by a major,
—Each troop (consisting of 2 lieutenants, 1 cornet,
1 quarter master sergeant, 4 sergeants, 4 corporals, 1
farrier, 1 saddler, 1 trumpeter, and 32 privates,) by a
captain,
—Supernumerary troops to be commanded by a
lieutenant colonel of the district, till increased so as to
be officered, &c.
—The governor and council directed to appoint immediately
to each district 1 lieutenant colonel and 2
majors,
