INDEX TO THE LAWS.
Such persons liable to fine for neglect or refusal,
as non-commissioned officers and privates are for absence
from parade,
Privates capable of serving as musicians
may, with
the consent of the captains, act as such in any other
company, on which their fines for absence from their
own companies may be remitted,
Any person of age, (and those between
18 and 21,
by consent of their parents, guardians, &c.) may
join
any uniformed company willing to receive them, when
formed within the regimental district,
A majority of such uniformed company
empowered
to determine on days of training throughout the year,
over and above those appointednotice to be given,
Empowered to impose fines by laws,
Limitation of such fines, and manner of collection,
Whenever a number of men not less
than forty-eight,
shall have formed themselves into a uniform company,
they shall make a return to the commandant of the regiment
or extra battalion,
He shall thereupon inspect or cause his adjutant
to inspect the same, and apply to the governor and
council for commissions for proper persons to command
said company, and forward the requisite certificate,
The governor and council shall thereupon transmit
an order to the armourer of the nearest arsenal for
the delivery of the number of arms, &c. therein mentioned,
But the order not to be delivered without a bond
with security for safe keeping and re-delivery of said
arms,
Directions as to persons residing
in the precincts of
the city of Baltimore,
Provision made for the return and
collection of fines,
&c. imposed by company courts martial,
For the return and collection of fines imposed by
regimental, brigade, division, and general courts martial,
&c.
Captains, &c. to make return annually
in October,
on oath, to the commanding officers of regiments, of
all Quakers, &c. exempt from militia duty, under
the
penalty therein mentioned,
Manner of collecting the sums payable by them,
as a consideration for their exemption,
Courts martial may acquit any delinquent,
upon its
appearing that sickness, or some such sufficient excuse
was the cause of the violation,
Paymasters to give bond to the state
in the penalty
of $1000, for the discharge of their duty, with security
to be appointed by the field officers,
Money paid to them to be appropriated to expenses,
and then to the purchase of arms, &c. for persons
unable to purchase them for themselves,
Commandants of regiments, &c.
authorised to establish
places of deposit for the arms, &c. belonging
thereto, and to order the commandants of companies
to return the arms, &c. thereto, after every parade,
Penalty on commandants of companies not complying
therewith,
Such commandants of regiments, &c. to employ
a person to keep and arrange the arms, &c. for which
he is to be paid out of the fines,
Penalty on auctioneers, constables,
or other persons,
selling any arms, &c. which there is reason to
believe are the property of the state,
In districts where a uniform company
may be formed,
and a number of persons shall not wish to uniform |
