            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

—The levy courts authorised to levy such sum as
will defray the expenses, provided they do not exceed
$100 per annum,
    Directions for transmitting to the levy courts copies
of judgments of the county courts for the opening or shutting
up roads, the damages, &c.

—Nothing herein to repeal the power before vested
in the levy courts, relating to the altering of public
road, through the lands of persons petitioning for such
alteration,

    The party prosecuted for a libel may give the truth of
the manner charged in evidence under the general issue
by way of justification,

    A lottery authorised for finishing a house of worship
therein,
    Money to be levied for repairing the Liberty-town
road,
    The trustees and stockholders of the Lancaster and
Grammar School of Liberty-town, in Frederick county,
incorporated, &c.

    Company of Emmitsburgh, incorporated,
—Of Baltimore, a lottery authorised for procuring
a building therefor,
    The Nottingham Library incorporated in Cæcil
county,
    A lottery or lotteries authorised in Prince-George's
county for the purchase of a public library, &c.

    Ordinary and retailers licenses in Baltimore county
directed to be granted by the original court,
    Money received in Baltimore, Annapolis and Easton,
for licenses, directed to be paid into the treasury,
    Parts of 1784, ch. 69, and ch. 49, and of 1790, ch.
14, repealed,
    All those parts of any acts requiring a license for retailing
strong beer and cider, repealed,
    In all cases of application to the Baltimore city court
for ordinary or retailers licenses, it shall be in their discretion
to grant or refuse the same,
—The penalty for selling without license increased,
    In cases of application for license or permit to retail
liquors in the counties therein mentioned, the duty of
the court of judge, or clerk, where no judge resides in
the county, to examine the applicant on oath as to the
persons for whose use it is intended, &c.
    The manner of granting licenses to retailers of liquors
in Kent county regulated, &c.  See Kent County.
    No person to exercise the office of a broker as therein
mentioned, without a license from the governor and
council,
—The license to be for one year only,
—The person to pay therefor to the treasurer $500,

    Bonds taken for the purchase money of lands sold
under the act to direct descents to be a lien,
    Bonds taken in virtue of the act respecting the debts
due to this state to be a lien on the real property, or
on so much as the governor and council shall think
sufficient, to be mentioned in a schedule annexed,
    Direction as to liens on the property of insolvent
debtors,
    Bonds given by persons electing to take the estate
at a valuation under the act to direct descents, &c. to
be a lien on the lands for the purchase of which they
were given,
