LEVY COURTS

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    The levy courts shall annually cause their clerks to
make out as many lists of the monies levied for county
charges as there are election districts,
—The lists to specify the amounts levied for different
purposes,
—To be signed by the clerks, and delivered to the
sheriffs ten days before the election for delegates, &c.
—To be set up by the sheriffs at each place of holding
elections within six days after delivery,
    The part of the act of 1798, ch. 34, requiring the
governor and council to appoint the justices of the levy
courts from those commissioned as justices of the peace,
repealed,
    The property of deceased persons formerly devolving
on free schools, to go the counties where there are no
colleges or schools, as therein directed,
—The levy courts empowered to sue for the same,
—To be applied by the levy courts towards the discharge
of the levy, or for the support of schools in the
county, as the justices may direct,
    The justices of the levy courts for the time being, in
each county, declared to be one corporation,
—Property of the county vested in them,
—Suits may be instituted by them, and indictments
maintained for injury or nuisance,
    The judges of the levy courts shall appoint, between
the first Monday of April and of August in every year,
three persons as judges for each election district, resident
therein,
—In case of death, resignation, &c. the levy courts
to appoint others at any meeting thereafter,
    The levy court in St. Mary's county to appoint annually
in August, judges of the elections,
    Provisions concerning constables and runaways,

    Power given to the levy courts to correct errors in
the assessment of property, and to levy and repay money
so assessed to the person, or his order, for whom
the same was levied,
—To levy the costs of trials in criminal cases where
the proceedings are transmitted to an adjoining county
court for trial, &c.
    The valuation of slaves, &c. sentenced to death, or
to the penitentiary, to be assessed with the county assessment,
&c.
    Costs accruing to constables on serving warrants in
criminal prosecutions to be levied on the county, &c.
on acquittal,
    Powers given to the levy court of Worcester county
as to tobacco warehouses and streets,
    No member of the levy court shall be a commissioner
of the tax,
    On the death of a collector the levy courts directed
to appoint another, &c.
    Certain proceedings of the levy court of Prince-George's
county confirmed,
    Powers given to the levy court of Frederick county
as to a building for the land records,
    The levy courts to levy the allowance to sheriffs for
the performance of their duties relative to elections,
    Inspectors of tobacco to pay to the levy courts the
proceeds of tobacco sold, after remaining for 4 years,
&c.
—The amount to be levied and repaid, on the owner
proving his property within one year,
    Lunatic paupers may be removed by the levy courts
to the Maryland Hospital on the certification of the
trustees of the poor,
