INDEX TO THE LAWS.
The returns of elections for sheriffs
to be made as
therein directed to the governor and council,
—Same for representatives to Congress,
—Same for electors of president and vice-president
of the United States,
The judges shall cause a certificate
of all the votes
given in the districts to be enclosed, sealed up, and
directed
to the governor and council, &c.
—They shall (in case of elections for delegates to
the general assembly, or for electors of the senate,)
cause the return, enclosed as aforesaid, to the governor
and council, to be addressed to the chancellor, to be
by
them delivered,
—Copies of the certificates to be sent to the governor
and council by the county clerk,
The governor and council on receiving
the returns
of electors to choose the president and vice-president,
and for members of Congress, to ascertain the votes given
for each, and thereupon declare by proclamation,
signed by the governor, the names of the persons elected,
—Such proclamation to be inserted in such newspapers
as they may direct,
Where two or more candidates have
an equal number
of votes, the governor and council to determine on
the election by lot,
The governor and council required
to appoint a keeper
of the penitentiary, who might be removed and another
appointed in like manner,
—His securities to be approved, and his bond executed
before and certified by them,
—Required to appoint in December annually
twelve inspectors,
Reports of stock, materials, &c.
to be made by the
Directors to the governor and council,
The governor and council to lay before
the general
assembly annually, during the first week of the session,
a statement of the profit and loss, &c.
—To remove the keeper from office, if guilty of any
fraud or misconduct, and to direct suits on his bond,
—Measures directed to be taken on the completion
of the building for the reception of criminals,
—Orders to be drawn by the governor and council
on the treasurer for the sums therein mentioned for the
penitentiary,
The governor and council to appoint
annually inspectors
of lumber for the city and county of Baltimore,
and in other parts when necessary,
Reports to be made to the governor
and council as
to money required for the penitentiary,
Vacancies in the militia by removal
and by resignation
of commissions, to be notified to the governor and
council,
—Application to be made to them on behalf of uniformed
companies in the militia for commissions,
arms, &c.
—Directions for the appointment of officers in the
cavalry,
—For the appointment of the staff therefor,
The governor and council authorised
to act till the
times severally prescribed for the next election by the
act of 1811, ch. 211,
Provision made for the settlement
of claims
arising from the employment of the militia, |
