FINES AND FORFEITURES

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    The county courts empowered to fine licensed
ferry keepers, on conviction of non performance of
their duties, not exceeding $100,
    Fine on sheriffs failing to return subpœnas and attachments
to the county courts, and to produce the
persons, &c. not exceeding $50,
—Execution to be issued therefor,
—On demanding or receiving more than one-eighth
for grinding Indian corn or rye, $50,
—Half to the state, and half to the informer, to be
recovered before a justice of the peace,
    Fine on the printer to the state, (if he accepts,) refusing
or neglecting to enter into bond as therein directed,
$100,
—His salary moreover to be forfeited,
    Fines on persons pulling down chains or ropes put
across the streets in Baltimore on Sabbaths, &c. to be
imposed at the discretion of the court,
    Fine on persons offending against the act to prevent
fraudulent sales of flour or whiskey, not more than $50,
nor less than $20,
—One half to the informer, and the other to the
person injured, to be recovered before any justice of
the peace,
    Fine on persons permitting or authorising a slave to
go at large or hire within the state, for every month,
not exceeding $20, and at the same rate for a shorter
time except 20 days at harvest,
—On persons hiring or contracting with such slave
except as before excepted, $20,
—Exception in both cases as to pilots,
—To be recovered by indictment,
    Fine for inspecting, marking, &c. any fish contrary
to this act, $50,
—On suits on the bonds of clerks or registers for
failure to record proceedings, a sum not exceeding
$1000, according to the nature of the offence, may be
assessed by the jury, and paid to the levy courts, or the
treasurer, as the case may be,
—Clerks and registers neglecting or refusing to
perform the duties prescribed, to forfeit a sum for every
offence, not exceeding $100,
—To be recovered by indictment,
    Fine on clerks or registers neglecting to perform the
several duties therein required, (concerning process,)
not exceeding $50,
—To be recovered by indictment,
—On sheriffs, coroners, &c. neglecting to serve
and return such process, not exceeding $50,
—An entry to be made of the proceedings as to such
process and fine, and a transcript sent to the court
where the sheriff, &c. resides, to compel the payment of
such fine to the clerk, to be accounted for to the treasurer,
    Provision as to fines under the act for building a
bridge over Patapsco,
—Same as to the bridge over Susquehanna near
Rock Run,
    Fine on the managers of any lottery offending
against the provisions of the 1st section of the act
to regulate lotteries, and the supplements, severally
$5000,
—To be recovered by indictment in the several
counties, or in the city of Baltimore,
—On commissioners being concerned in any lottery
scheme or ticket in the state, 5000 dolls.
—To be recovered by action of debt in Baltimore
city court, one half to the informer, and the other to
the state,
—On persons selling shares of tickets contrary to
this act, 500 dolls.
